A Work in Progress

What's black and white and red all over?

My new gallery/meeting room!

I am expanding my studio space! It will have black and white carpet, a large screen TV for slide shows and video, and black and white gallery wraps on the walls.

It's a work in progress!

Black and White

In the early 1980's I had my own black and white darkroom in the bathroom of my apartment.  I would hang the images to dry on the shower curtain rod.  In 1993 I bought my first copy of Photoshop; it came on about 20 floppy discs (remember those things?).  Last year I bought CS4 and Adobe Lightroom 2.0, and all I had to do was download the software.  These days I can create a huge variety of black and white images, with all kinds of different tinting, toning, and contrast with the click of a mouse.  I upload the image to my lab and the print arrives at the door three days later.  The technology is amazing.

But sometimes I miss seeing the image come to life in the pan!

Have a fun and relaxing weekend.

Tom and Rachel - January 31, 2009

Here are a few more images from Tom and Rachel's wedding in late January. Rachel babysat my daughters when she was in high school, and she was the best babysitter we ever had! I was glad to have the opportunity to shoot her wedding. And the weather was great for late January in the Quad Cities.

Thanks Rachel and Tom!

Kristi Clark

Kristi has been second shooting with me for three years now!  We met when she and Jason hired me to shoot her wedding about four years ago.  And through that client/photographer relationship, she started working with me.  She has come a long way in three years!

I am working on new galleries for Kristi and Felicia since they are booking weddings as associates of my studio.  I was so impressed with the images she submitted, I had to post them here first!

All the images below were shot by Kristi at weddings she and Felicia shot together with their clients.  There are no second shooting images with me in these collages!

Felicia and Kristi have packages starting at $1900.00.  I will have all new images in their galleries on the web site soon!

Call the studio for pricing details for felicia and Kristi.

Robert and Rebecca

Photoshop Effect or Not?

I have had several people ask me how I manipulated the image below of Robert and Rebecca in Photoshop.  Although you can produce the effect in Photoshop, this image was not Photoshop enhanced.  The effect was created using the old fashioned way, with a zoom lens!  I was reluctant to include the image in the proof-set because there is so much blur.  But the rose petals in the air are almost tack sharp, while there is varying degrees of blur throughout the rest of the image.

Photoshop is a great tool for photographers, and I use it on almost every image I deliver to clients.  But I try to avoid overuse of the special effects.  I see a lot of wedding photography web sites and almost every image looks "over Photoshoped," with too many special effects, overlays, and "gee whiz" actions.  I like to use these too!  But I try to use them sparingly.

The image above was shot about 1-2 seconds after the one blelow.  I used Photoshop on both shot to make the colors vibrant.
